Mondulkiri Elephants & Wildlife Sanctuary

On the North Eastern part of Cambodia, close to the Vietnam border is Mondulkiri, a region less visited by tourists who can only think of Angkor Wat when visiting the Kingdom of Wonder. The province has a lot of attractions to offer to tourists: Dense forests, Cambodian jungles, plenty of waterfalls, indigenous villages, natural landscapes and of course, the warm hospitality of the locals Cambodia is known for. The region is a rising destination for nature, elephant & wildlife sanctuaries and eco-tourism projects. However, please be mindful when choosing a place to embark on a wildlife / elephant adventure. Choose a sanctuary or a project that does not mistreat elephants, does not disturb the wildlife and a project that really gives back to the community. In Mondulkiri province, there are several elephant projects but there are only two registered NGOs so far which really focus on providing welfare for the elephants and promoting wildlife conservation in the region. One of which is the Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary.

About the Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary is a developing ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project situated in Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The project is a joint initiative between the Bunong hill tribe, locals and L.E.A.F, a local non-profit organization that works towards wildlife conservation through ethical elephant tours and community-based eco-tourism projects.

The Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary currently sponsors the release and care of six (6) ex-working Cambodian elephants that are negotiated to free them from logging work, commercial tourist rides and heavy farm work. The elephants at the sanctuary are given the opportunity to have a safe and peaceful home and the chance to socialize and roam around the jungles with other elephants – allowing these gentle giants live freely in their natural habitat.

How You Can Help/Support this Developing Elephant and Wildlife Project

The Mondulkiri Elephant & Wildlife Sanctuary gives visiting tourists the opportunity to have a close encounter with the Asian elephants and experience the wildlife in the Mondulkiri province. They offer community-based eco-tourism programs: Ethical Elephant Experience and Spirit Forest Hike, A Journey Through Community Forests and the Mondulkiri Sanctuary and Elephant and Wildlife Volunteering Program. All the contributions directly go to the sanctuary’s forest conservation and wildlife rehabilitation projects.

Ethical Elephant Experience and Spirit Forest Hike

Mondulkiri Elephants

This is a one-day program that will take you to the sanctuary and will give you the chance to learn more about the projects, the local culture and traditions and get up close to the gentle giants. The day will begin with a visit to a sacred spirit forest where you can get wonderful views from the hilltop. You will then hike through the natural habitats of the elephants and will meet the Asian elephants. You will have the opportunity to feed them, trek with them, wash them in the elephant pools or simply observe their natural behaviors. Elephant riding is prohibited. This is priced at $45 per person.

A Journey Through Community Forests and the Mondulkiri Sanctuary

Mondulkiri Elephants

This will be a two-day adventure which will take you to the sanctuary and will let you discover hidden gems kept within the Cambodian jungles. You will start the day with a trek through the Bunong community forests, visit amazing waterfalls and a visit to the traditional villages to learn more about their culture and traditions. This requires you to stay overnight at the sanctuary. Be ready to experience staying in a traditional Bunong hut. On the second day of your visit, you will have to make your way to a sacred spirit forest and will have the opportunity to be with the Cambodian elephants. Trek with them through the jungles, feed them and wash them in the elephant pools. Again, without elephant riding. The two-day program is priced at $75 per person including the meals and overnight accommodation.
